Big hoo-ha this week in gun nut circles as Outdoor Life columnist and Remington spokesman Jim Zumbo disses America’s AR-15 and AK-47 owners, insisting their preferred firearms are “‘terrorist’ rifles.”
Whoa!
Because he’s an asshat, he made things worse with a hasty apology, in which he confessed that what was responsible for the column was his fatigue at the end of day of intense prairie dog killing that actually allowed a little candor to slip into his blog.
At no time did he actually withdraw his comments, which are now prominently featured on the Brady Campaign’s MySpace blog. Way to go, dude!
I did a little write-up on this in our forum.
But shit like this should not surprise a guntard. There are a lot of hunters out there who would be happy to give up all our gun rights just so long as they are allowed to keep their bolt-action rifles and double-barrel shotguns so they can shoot little animals. Also, for most of these asshats, the only way a firearm related activity can be recreational or a “sport” is if some animals get killed. Otherwise, apparently, it’s “terrorist training.” We can thank morons like Jim Zumbo for the entire “sporting uses” concept of the 1968 Gun Control Act, which is anathema to gun rights.
It was partly in reaction to people like this that Guntards.net was set up. We intend to cut through the bullshit here and defend gun rights, not just hunters rights. We aren’t going to make excuses for our choices, because we harm no one with them and excuses aren’t necessary. We will show pictures of scary black rifles from time to time, with people enjoying them. Often children. We probably won’t be showing a lot of pics of mangled dead bunnies, though that might disappoint the Jim Zumbos of the world. But Jim Zumbo is clearly not guntard material.
PS: On the front page of the Remington website there’s a little notice that “Remington is in the process of severing our sponsorships with Mr. Zumbo.” I’m not much one for schadenfreude, but that made my lips curl up into a smile. And my respect for Remington went up a notch too.
