Lawless lawmakers in Philadelphia

Are we the only ones to see the irony in a City Council demanding that citizens follow their gun control laws when they can’t be bothered to follow state law themselves?

Yesterday the Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed eight gun control laws. Alarmed at 137 murders so far this year, we can only assume they are resorting to gun control to make sure they can achieve Washington DC levels of carnage (Philadelphia’s homicide rate is lagging in 8th place among US cities of over 200,000 people, frustratingly far behind gun-free Washington’s impressive 5th place position).

The only problem is, it is against state law for the city to enact its own firearms legislation. “What would they do, arrest us?” asked Councilman James F Kenney. That’s the sort of talk that gets my vote!

It is becoming increasingly clear that America’s law-abiding gun owners are pretty much the only people left in this country willing to obey the laws. Certainly no one in any position of power, from the White House to Congress to local City Councils, feels compelled to follow the law. And it’s just a guess, but the people committing all those murders in Philadelphia probably have a low opinion of the law as well.

Clever folks in Philadelphia. Of course, when gun control fails to make any impact on Philly’s homicide rate (you read it here first, bookmark this page!), the City Council’s proposed new solution will be . . . even more gun control!
